That Place Between Sleep and Waking, the Hypnagogic State

k

a few days ago,
i was busy with a chore,
the TV was on and
i was half-listening to a movie,
Hook (1991)

i suddenly stopped what i was doing
when some dialog jumped out at me

Tinkerbell was saying goodbye
to a grown-up Peter Pan,
she ended with something like,

"meet me in that place between waking and sleep,
i will be waiting for you there,
i will love you there,
i will always love you there"

Tinkerbell's lines stuck in my head,
and they were still rattling around
at 4 A.M. this morning,
as i was drinking coffee
and trying to wake,

it seemed that Tinkerbell
had identified another one
of those many things that are
worthy of a good PonderAbout

so i started pondering -
OK, i know that place
between waking and sleep,
it is one of the most interesting places i go

but what is it?

for an answer
i got up, pressed, clicked
and visited three of the venerable sages
of our electronic village -
Google, Wikipedia and Amazon.com

Google tells me that the place is called
"the Hypnagogic or Hypnogogic State"

Wikipedia, is surprising unclear, stating,
"this article may require cleanup", and
"the factual accuracy of this section is disputed"

so off to the Amazon.com,
however, entering either
"hypnagogic state", "hypnagogic",
"hypnogogic state", "hypnogogic",
will not identify a book/author
that focuses exclusively on this topic -
i guess this place really is mysterious!

but, whatever it is,

what do we find when we enter
that place between sleep and waking?

and why do we find it there?

like Peter Pan,
is there some we need to remember,
understand or do?
