The above is one of the 316 questions in
Pablo Neruda's The Book of Questions.

Each of these questions defies a logical answer.

Each instantly paints a picture which at first
seems valid; but then, as the neocortex kicks
into gear, surprise and bewilderment set in.

Here is another example -

And does the father
who lives in your dreams
die again when you awaken?

Neruda wrote The Book of Questions after he
was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature
in 1971, and shortly before his death in 1973.

The book's simple, innocent-sounding questions
are anything but simple or innocent -

They reflect the wisdom and wit of a man
whom many consider to be Latin America's
greatest poet.
