Why Do Stars Twinkle?

5/29/2007
k

stars "twinkle" because we view them
through eddies, streams and rivers of air

as starlight passes through
layer upon layer of turbulent, flowing air,
it is bent, or "refracted"

this refraction is produced by the differing
temperatures and densities of the air currents

the next time you absentmindedly note that
the "stars are out tonight",
you may want to pause to PonderAbout
the wondrous fact that you are viewing
inconceivably massive burning spheres,
across unimaginable distances,
from the bottom of a swirling ocean of air
