Western vs. Eastern Philosophy

12/7/2009

A provactive passage from Benjamin Hoff's,
The Te of Piglet:

Out of the "Hundred Schools" of Chinese philosophy,
only two -- Confucianism and Taoism -- have survived.
The have lasted through thousands of years because
they have proven most Useful. The Chines are very
practical people -- they have no respect for things
that sound good but don't work. In the East generally,
and in China especially, philosophy has always been
considered of no value unless it can be, and is, applied
in one's daily life.

Western philosophy, having little connection with
everyday living, is (to this observer, at least)
comparatively egocentric and impractical, with
much Arguing and Theorizing, and much bounding back
and forth across the intellectual landscape -- a
pleasant, part-time diversion formulated by and aimed
at the likes of Owl, Rabbit, and sometimes Eeyore, but
not supportive of the likes of Piglet and Pooh.
Western philosophy has become the domain of pipe-
smoking, tweed-suited college professors (who may
profess it but not necessarily practice it) and hyper-
cerebral students who, for all their intelligence,
often seem to have a hard time washing their clothes
or repairing the lawn mower.

It would be very practical to have a western way of controlling your different and obligatory personae, guided by an established and proven workable (eastern) set or school of thought. I believe a state of everlasting and consistent psychosis would provide for some aspects towards this goal, but unfortunately this is not an accepted, nor highly-valued option.

Funny.

I don't see any reason to suppose that eastern philosophy is "more useful" than western philosophy. Simply put, there is a greater variety of western philosophy readily available, not all of it useful. In comparing ancient philosophies, the Greeks and Romans developed very practical philosophies on par with the Chinese philosophical works you mention in your post.

Its long been a mystery to me why so many revere a culture that is stupid, repressive and horrifyingly brutal. They would have piglet skewered and served up before he could let out a squeal...

I do not believe there is an eastern philosophy. Philosophy is a rigorous study of, and judicious set of arguments for, held notions of reality. A real philosophical position requires good reasoning in support of a position with a respected and well developed rebuttal for opposing arguments. Philosophy is not a mere set of aphorisms. I do not know of any eastern form of thought that entails well developed arguments. Instead, eastern thought, i.e. Confucianism and Taoism are merely sets of aphorisms.

Eastern philosophies seem to focus more on morality and how one should live their lives in a very morally driven way. Western philosophy however, is often a response to Western or Westernized religions. The whole point is to raise questions. As long as questions are being raised, those who ask will not fall prey to one set of ideologies. Conformism breeds unquestioning and blind ignorance, which itself breeds hate. This unquestioned and misunderstood hate is then used to make the world an even shittier place than it is already.

Wow. I find this to be a tad bit offensive. Not only can I create the next "Facebook" with my computer programming abilities, but I do laundry and lawn care on the regular... to assume that a person capable of grasping such concepts would find it too insurmountable to put a shirt in a machine and press 'go' - is an extreme insult. Maybe it's the fact that EXISTENCE IS SHIT - at least in the West - that drives us modern philosophers into escapism of sorts... but you can thank SOCRATES for that school of thought - that even if our bodies were to be imprisoned - at least in our minds we can be free. I also see Western philosophy as being concerned more with the COLLECTIVE CONSCIOUS than of the personal ego. Does death not terrify you? Is life not comforting? We 'Western Philosophers' dare to ask - WHAT'S NEXT? WHAT LIES AHEAD? WHAT COMES AFTER? Grow some balls. Pfft.

<< I also agree with Will. << I think though, that I may just be offended enough (by the initial post) to call it a night. Good day, sir.
