THE ever-present inner sound

6/12/2007

there is an inner sound
that is always with us

it can be heard any time,
if we learn how to find it

it has been described as
the sound that remains
when everything around us
is dead silent

it has been called various things
by the world's philosophical,
spiritual and religious traditions

some call it THE sound

author Steve DeWitt calls it
The Sound Current and
describes it as follows,

Ever since I can remember,
I've heard this high pitched
sound in my head.

It's kind of like the keening
made by high voltage electrical
wires or when an old TV is
switched off.

I knew this sound wasn't caused
by blood flowing through my ear
drums because it didn't vary with
my pulse or any other physical
function.

I could hear it loud and clear
anytime I put my attention on it;
in fact, it was so natural that as a
child I thought everybody heard it.

from Warriors of the Sound Current

Eric Gustafson, calls it
The Ringing Sound,

The auditory perceptions we have
been referring to may be perceived
in many ways.

Commonly, they take the form of
ringing sounds. They may be
perceived as anything from a
ringing, or a buzzing (like the
sound of a florescent light),
to music.

A common analogy likens the
experience to that of listening to
high-tension electric power lines.

he adds that the sound,

is always present, even when
unperceived. When it is perceived,
it need not be a negative feature
of life.

In fact, it tends to create tension
only when one struggles to ignore it.

Acknowledging the sound current
gives rise to understanding. It can
then become a great key to the
development of personal energy
and vitality.

- from The Ringing Sound

finally, this inner sound can
serve as the object focused
upon in meditation

to illustrate, here is a greatly
edited version of meditation
instructions provided by
Sri Brahmarishi Narad,

Focus your full, undivided attention
in the center of your brain . . .

Listen with your attention for
whatever sounds present themselves . . .

in time, definite tones will present
themselves like sustained notes
on an organ . . .

You should focus your entire
undivided attention on the sound
of highest pitch that you can hear,
and let it draw you up into higher
and higher states of consciousness . . .

I have been aware of this sound for as long as I can remember. I used to just ignore it,but recently I have started paying more and more attention to it.It helps me to quiet the inner chatter of my mind.I now believe it to be the small still voice of God. The voice dosen't necessarily have to mean "words". The voice can be a steady sound, or sound wave.

longtime meditator - I have used "inner sound current" for years - many times it becomes louder & louder, culminating in a "crack" sound on an outer level in the room that I am meditating in...all part of the process.
