overrated.

Over-rated? Frank's tremendously under-rated and I think that's fine. The general population writes him off and that's OK. Then there are those of us that can't get enough and we don't make alot of noise about it. I don't know where you come up with "over-rated".

before you call him over rated you should read some interviews with him and stuff. i'm not upset or offended i'm just saying. he had so much to say about the social change in the 60's and nearly all of it was high end intellectual material. he was amazing smart and down to earth as it turns out...

So I've basically only listened to a compilation album my ex used to keep in his car (it was one of two cds the moody car deigned to play) but anyone who calls Frank Zappa overrated clearly hasn't listened to anything of his because it is near impossible to overrate. Or Steve Vai's because he is immensely talented and got his break through Zappa. Who would have wasted countless hours of time transcribing Zappa's music if it weren't worth something? Plus, barely anyone I know is familiar with Zappa so overrated is a ridiculous statement.

My favorite Zappa quote came when Tipper Gore asked him if he thought rock music was responsible for drug use and/or violence: "I wrote a song about dental floss, but nobody's teeth got any cleaner."

I'm not a huge fan (though I do like some) of Frank's music but I love his brain. Probably one of the, if not the, smartest musician of the 20th century.

Says the guy who hired Steve Vai?
Posted by S2 on 5/4/2010 5:52:39 PM
@S2 Yes, the guy who hired Steve Vai. Frank was a genius, and had the foresight to recognize the brilliance of a 19 year old Steve Vai. Vai is an incredible talent who creates beautiful, complex, emotional, spiritual works of art. He's a groundbreaking artist who's following in Frank's footsteps by making amazing classical music in addition to his rock works. And oh yeah, he can play guitar really well too. Just because someone is extremely technically skilled on their instrument, does not mean they are uncreative, mindless robots like the guitarists Zappa is here describing (a la Yngwie). Yet there will be still be many critics willing to listen to one or two songs by an artist who can actually play their instrument and write them off as 'just one of those 80s shredders' and rob them selves of some of the most rewarding music available to them.

I do not exist. I can prove this as well. In 155 years no one will have a clue I ever existed or didn't. In fact this conversation is pointless. However I will love and make as many people happy as I can while I exist and not exist at the same time. PEACE OUT -

Deep Purple immortalized the dude in Smoke On The Water. He's God now.

Growing up, the first album I ever bought was Freak Out by The Mothers Of Invention (Zappa). I've never been the same since.
