Dancing On Top Of The World

9/4/2007
with the anniversary of the 9/11 one week away,
I can't help thinking about the World Trade Center

many images come to mind; most of them chilling
or flat out sickening - you know these images

there is one exception though; an image of the WTC
that is bitter sweet, in some ways, mystical

it's the image of Frenchman Philippe Petit crossing
the gap between the two towers on a high-wire;
with 100,000 people watching 1/4 mile below

describing the experience, Petit said

I had a sense of dancing on top of the world.

from the video below,

The astonishing feat of high-wire poetry was the
highest point in Philippe Petit's life and, in many ways,
in the life of the twin towers themselves . . .

and

Philippe Petit was the first person that humanizes
these things, he put a human mark on them.

the above video is comprised of excerpts from
Ric Burns' The Center of the World aired by PBS
each year to mark the anniversary of 9/11
