philosopher
Alan Watts contended that for millenia
we in the West have used a particular conceptual
model to understand our world
it is a model so much a part of us, so built into our
language, culture, and way of thinking, that we don't
recognize it for what it is -
just a model, image, or representation
Watts called it -
The Ceramic Model of the Universeit is a model in which the world is seen to be an
artifact, a creation, made by a God, who is a
technician working from a Divine Plan
for example, Adam of the Book of Genesis, was
made by God "from the dust of the Earth"
Watts contended,
"and so in this way, we inherit a conception of
ourselves as being artifacts, as being made; and
it is perfectly natural in our culture for a child
to ask its mother, 'How was i made?' "in contrast to the Ceramic Model, Watts held that
Eastern cultures have used an alternative model to
understand the world; one in which the world is seen
as something that
grows and
