The Origin of Brubeck’s "Take Five"

10/11/2007

Take Five by the Dave Brubeck Quartet is the
all-time best-selling jazz single.

It was first released in 1959, on Time Out, a
ground-breaking album whose compositions
were experiments in rhythm.

These songs employed unusual time signatures
that challenged listeners, forcing them learn new
musical idioms.

Take Five, written in 5/4 time, has a unique
sound that has helped it remain fresh and popular
over the decades.

Today, it is likely the single most recognizable
jazz composition; and for many, Take Five
was their introduction to jazz.

The video below tells how the Dave Brubeck
Quartet
pooled their talents to create this
unique piece.

The soundtrack of the above video is from a
program in the NPR 100 series.
