Let's give an example of the Ricci. Say you are in your starship and close to the edge of the universe. You want to see the very edge, so you move your ship out beyond all the last stars, out on the ragged edge, billions of light years from earth. What will happen? You will never get to the edge, because the matter and energy in your starship is continually creating more space out beyond where you are. You are in effect, advancing the edge as you travel forward, pushing the edge farther away.

There is not a thing beyond the universe. Nothing at all. What happens is that space is created by the presence of matter/energy. Therefore, when the universe expands, it creates its own space to expand into. This has to do with the Ricci curvature characteristics of space. R_(ab) = 8 pi { T_(ab) - 1/2 g_(ab) T }

I don't think it's such a bad idea to make Festivus an official holiday...at least it's secular and could be enjoyed by everyone! Besides, as evidenced by palces like http://www.cafepress.com/hoganstore/1782703 , it's beginning to gain traction in the marketplace of ideas and commerce!

I don't believe that anything outside ourselves will fill this void. We can delude our minds with religion, thinking that God is the answer to all of life's questions, but that way of thinking is not only intellectually lazy and short-sighted, but sets a person up to feel disappointed and jaded when that belief fades away.

If we are truly honest with ourselves, we realize that life does not have to have a meaning. Just because we want it to have meaning, is not a reason for it to be so. And spending each day agonizing over what that meaning could be is a fruitless endeavor that causes more needless suffering.

But a universal lack of purpose is not a reason to despair. There may not be any grand, cosmic meaning to our existence, but that does not mean that we can't have our own personal reasons to value life and deter us from off-ing ourselves on any given day. Just like what he mentioned above: sex, love, family, perhaps the idea of discovery, through science or philosophy, are all ways to keep a person content and hopefully fulfilled in some way.

Actually, I think a prose writer bested all the poets when it came to defining love: "The condition where another's happiness is essential to your own." -- Robert Heinlein

Heinlein's definition may lack poetry, it may lack romance, and it certainly lacks symbolism, metaphor and analogy; but it has the advantage of razor sharpness.
